In April 2021 I took part in TakiWaehere, the New Zealand Geospatial Hackathon. Within it we had 48 hours to create a prototype that used MAXAR satellite imagery to respond to a challenge.
Our chosen problem was Managing Emergencies.
Over the course of the 48 hours we created a prototype able to detect flooding in satellite imagery, then create a hazard map to inform emergency response teams of what areas where effected and what assets (Buildings, Roads, etc…) may be in danger or unusable.

I was joined by Oliver Grafeuille (Computer Science PhD student), Amelia Lin (Engineering PhD Student), and Samuel Roeslin (Engineering PhD Student)

As an output to the challenge we created an example map webapp and a storymap explaining the prototype, check them out for more details.

Overall we had a great time and even managed to get a full night’s sleep within those 48 hours.

We also ended up winning the TakiWaehere Hackathon which was a very exciting surprise.
