AT Kids: Designing for small humans

Statement of Intent

This project was to create a version of the AT transport app for 6-year olds. With this app I hoped to teach kids how to use public transport, as well as engage them in the learning via use of a game-like interface.

The Project

This project was run along 2 others as a design sprint, so was only ever intended as a prototype. The first thing I did was look around at the original AT hop app, and at various kids apps.

Precedent Research

I then went through the process of coming up with different ideas for what the app could be and narrowing in on one. For that one I created a simple flow diagram for the prototype.

Ideation

Then I got working with Figma to create it. I worked through the basic game logic of the two minigames first, making each thing as a component so I could later come back and edit their appearance. This turned out to be a good idea as I needed to go through and change the size of the buttons to make them easier to hit, and then later still to edit the appearance of the people they where planning the route to pick up.

The Characters

I created 3 characters for the kids to interact with across these mini-games. Tiri the Triangle, Star the Star, and Cecil the Circle.

This was the first prototype I finished, and the only one I managed to get proper feedback on. Although sadly did not have time to edit before hand in. If I had had more time I would have liked to play with shadows and shades to make all the buttons and pins look more like buttons so that it would be more instinctive to click on it. I would also have liked to update all of the art assets to make them more clear, such as the bus, map, and characters. Also I would have liked to implement more mini-games, such as one to assist with learning to find addresses and one to teach public transport safety.
